Galatians 4:4 “But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law.” (NLT)
I know I don’t have to tell you Who’s birthday we celebrate on December 25th! I’ll give you a hint: it’s not Santa’s! You got it! Jesus’s!! Actually, technically speaking, one might say, it’s God’s birthday. Now before you go getting all riled and calling me a crazy heretic, I’m well aware that God is an eternal Being. He’s always existed. In fact, He’s the “Self-existent One”. I AM is who He told Moses to tell the people had sent him.
But humor me. The Bible says that “When the time was right God sent forth His Son….” His Son! The religious leaders understood very clearly that when Jesus claimed to be the Son of God that He was “…making Himself to be equal with God.” (John 5:17) Jesus said “He that sees the Son has seen the Father.” (John 14:9) The birth of Christ was most assuredly not His beginning! Jesus is absolutely one with the Father and coequal in every regard. He is, therefore the Self-Existent One just as much as the Father is! He is God with us—Emmanuel! (Isaiah 7:14) But, as a man, God had to have a birthday. There had to be that moment in time when He would join the human race. For you see, had He never had a birthday, had He never became a man, He could not have, as a man fulfilled all the Law satisfying all the righteous demands of God on behalf of man and then become sin in our place on the Cross, and there shed His blood and die that we, through faith in Him, might have eternal life! I know that’s a mouth full! Here’s the deal, I know that Christmas is the celebration of the birth Jesus, the Son of God. But we must understand that in a larger sense, it was God’s birthday, the day that God the Son took on flesh for the very purpose of becoming the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world! In other words, He was born to die! Now that’s a birthday Gift to end all gifts!
Have you received the Gift of God’s Son? Have you in turn given Him yourself in response to all He has given to you? After all, it is His birthday we are celebrating! He’s let us know what He wants. He wants us! He put us in this world for the very purpose of worshipping and loving Him and sharing His amazing love with one another! When these purposes are lived out in our lives—talk about your Merry Christmas! Everyday becomes Christmas!!
